Why do Jains celebrate Deepavali? ???? . Diwali has a very important significance in Jainism. Jains celebrate Diwali as it is on this day that " 24th Tirthankar " , Bhagwan Mahaveer attained Moksha (liberation) at Pavapuri (Bihar) about 2500 years ago. From this day on Jains celebrate Diwali. The chief disciple of Bhagwan Mahaveer, Gandhar Gautam Swami also attained Keval Gyan (complete knowledge) on this day. It was a New Moon night. It is believed that many Gods (dev) were present at Pavapuri when Bhagwan Mahaveer was attaining Moksha which lit up the dark night sky. Diyas (lamps) are lit to symbolically keep the light of knowledge alive. On Diwali morning, Nirvana Lado is offered after praying to Lord Mahavira in all Jain temples across the globe.
