On May 10, 1857, the parade ground of Meerut became the flashpoint of a revolution. Colonel John Finnis of the 11th Regiment, Bengal Army, attempted to suppress the uprising among the sepoys of the 20th Regiment. He was shot dead from his horse—the first British officer to be killed in what would ignite the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
Today, his grave lies in silence in the St. John’s Church cemetery, Meerut, while history still echoes with the fire of that day.

10 मई 1857 को मेरठ की परेड ग्राउंड पर इतिहास ने करवट ली। बंगाल आर्मी की 11वीं रेजिमेंट के कर्नल जॉन फिनिस ने 20वीं रेजिमेंट के सिपाहियों की बगावत को रोकने का प्रयास किया। उन्हें घोड़े से गोली मार दी गई — 1857 की क्रांति में मारे जाने वाले पहले ब्रिटिश अधिकारी बन गए।
आज उनका मकबरा सेंट जॉन्स चर्च के कब्रिस्तान में मौन है, पर वह दिन अब भी इतिहास में गूंजता है।
