In the heart of Meerut, beneath the silence of Old St. John’s Cemetery, lies one of the most eccentric figures of colonial India—Major-General David Ochterlony. Born in Boston in 1758, Ochterlony journeyed to India and rose to become a trusted British officer and the first Resident at Delhi. But he wasn’t your typical colonel in red coat and stiff manners. Nicknamed “Loony Akhtar”, he embraced Mughal culture with passion—donning Indian attire, smoking hookah, and famously parading each evening in Delhi followed by his 13 wives on 13 elephants. His diplomacy earned him the Mughal title “Nasir ud-Daula” and the trust of Emperor Shah Alam. He played a key role in defending Delhi in 1804 and during the Nepal War, but it’s his personal style that made him legendary. A true bridge between two worlds. He passed away in 1825 after a brief illness at his summer house in Shalimar Bagh, Delhi.
