मुगल दरबार से जुड़े परिवार में जन्मे, उन्होंने कुरान और विज्ञान की शिक्षा प्राप्त की।
1838 में ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी की सेवा में आए, 1867 में स्मॉल कॉज़ कोर्ट के जज बने और 1876 में सेवा से निवृत्त हुए।
