Decades later, from the same soil—including Khekra, then part of Meerut—emerged a fearless daughter: Neera Arya. Born on 5 March 1902, Neera Arya was a soldier of the Rani Jhansi Regiment in Subhash Chandra Bose’s Azad Hind Fauj. Known as “Neera Nagini”, she is remembered as India’s first female spy, who chose her country over everything—even her marriage. Married to CID officer Shri Kant Jayaranjan Das, she discovered he was plotting against Netaji. When he attempted to assassinate Bose, Neera killed her own husband to protect the leader she believed in. For this, she was sentenced to Kala Pani—the dreaded Andaman cellular jail. Tortured for secrets she never revealed, her silence became her resistance. A jailer once ordered her breast to be cut when she said, “Netaji lives in my heart.” After independence, she was released—but not rewarded. Forgotten by the nation she served, Neera Arya spent her final years in poverty, selling flowers on the streets of Hyderabad to survive. On 26 July 1998, she passed away quietly—unsung, but unbroken. Today, a memorial and national award bear her name in Khekra, but her legacy still awaits its rightful place in the mainstream.
