In the historic city of Bharatpur, Rajasthan, stands the tomb of Shamsher Bahadur I, the courageous son of Peshwa Bajirao I and Mastani. Born as Krishna Rao, he faced societal prejudice but rose to become a valiant Maratha commander. In the Third Battle of Panipat (1761), he led 3,000 cavalrymen with great bravery. As the Maratha forces were overwhelmed, Shamsher Bahadur chose to stand and fight rather than retreat. Gravely wounded, he somehow reached Kumbher, where he was hospitably received by Jat King Surajmal of Bharatpur, known for his valor and statesmanship. Despite all efforts, Shamsher succumbed to his wounds. His last words reportedly were filled with anguish: “Where will I go now? To whom will I show my face now… Bhau!
